Chip-Disk Filtration Chip Conveyor

Keeps chips out of the coolant tank
  • Overview

This heavy-duty steel, belt-type chip conveyor has a built-in disc filtration system that prevents chips from entering the coolant tank, while the belt removes chips from the machine quickly, and discharges them at standard barrel height, with minimal coolant carryout. It is ideal for high-production machining applications, or when machining hard or abrasive materials. The conveyor can be activated via M-code, or directly from the control pendant, and there are settings to control the interval and duration of the conveyor cycle for automatic operation. Smart-sensing technology automatically reverses the conveyor if a jam occurs.

NOTE: The CDF Conveyor is highly recommended for aluminum machining applications that generate large quantities of smaller chips.

ATTENTION! The CDF Conveyor extends further beyond the machine enclosure than the standard conveyor, requiring additional space for installation/removal and operation. See the machine layout drawing for space requirements.

Requires the 95-gallon (360 liter) coolant tank.

  • Built-in disc filtration system
  • Heavy-duty steel belt-type chip conveyor
  • Activated via M-code, or from the control pendant
  • User settings to control cycle interval and duration for automatic operation
  • Automatic reversal upon torque overload situations
  • Recommended for aluminum machining applications

SHIPPING NOTE: The CDF Conveyor ships separately from the machine, and may incur additional shipping charges.

CDF Conveyor Benefits

The CDF (chip disk filtration) conveyor option is the perfect solution for chip management issues caused by applications that produce light chips that can float on the coolant, such as aluminum and other light materials. These chips can travel along the coolant path and stick to the conveyor belt, resulting in carryover into the coolant tank and machine.

The CDF conveyor is similar to a standard belt-style chip conveyor, but with added features to solve these problems.

  • Eliminates carryover of chips back into machine
  • 24 mesh disk filter keeps the coolant tank free of chips and debris
  • Integrated backwash system keeps chips on the belt for proper evacuation to chip hopper or barrel (includes additional pump)
  • Increases machine up-time for more production
  • Debris-free coolant for better TSC performance
  • Automatically reverses if a jam occurs
  • Activated via M-code, or from the control pendant
  • Settings control the interval and duration of operation
  • Lift angle minimizes coolant carryout
  • Discharges at standard barrel height

Chip Disk Filter

The filter disk (at right) rotates when the conveyor is running, and collects chips that are floating in the coolant. Coolant is pumped through the side shown to return the chips to the conveyor belt, and then out to the chip barrel.

The disk is like an oil skimmer, but for chips. It picks up the chips that are already in the coolant, and lifts them out of the tank to return them to the conveyor belt.

  • Stainless steel 24 mesh filter
  • Filters sediment larger than 0.027" (686 µm)

How it Works

The CDF screen has pockets on the side that faces the inside of the coolant tank, and chips floating in the coolant are pushed into the pockets by the regular coolant flow. As the disk rotates, the chips are lifted out of the tank, and then washed back onto the conveyor belt to get evacuated.

The included pump flows coolant back through the disk filter to wash the collected chips onto the conveyor belt, so they can be carried out of the machine.

Back Wash Pump

The Chip Disk Filtration conveyor includes a separate pump for washing the chips back onto the belt conveyor and out of the machine. The pump mounts on the machine coolant tank, next to the other pump, or pumps.

  • 1/4 hp (0.19 kW) pump included
  • 6-gallon (22 liter) per minute at 10 psi (0.69 bar)

Settings That Control Automatic Conveyor Operation

  • Setting 114 CONVEYOR CYCLE controls the interval at which the belt-style conveyor will start automatic operation during a cycle.
  • Setting 115 CONVEYOR ON-TIME controls the duration the belt-style conveyor) will run during automatic operation.
  • Setting 196 CONVEYOR SHUTOFF specifies the amount of time to wait without activity prior to stopping the conveyor.

NOTE: The operator doors must be closed to operate the belt-style conveyor.

Program Conveyor Operation

  • M31 starts the belt-style conveyor in the forward direction to remove chips.
    • Once started, and the machine is in cycle, the conveyor will run for the time specified in Setting 115 CONVEYOR ON-TIME, and then shut off.
    • Once started, and the machine is in cycle, the conveyor will restart after the time in Setting 114 CONVEYOR CYCLE, and run for the time specified in Setting 115.
    • While the machine is in cycle, you can start the conveyor by pressing the [CHIP FWD] button on the keyboard. Once started, Settings 114 and 115 have the same effect as described above.
    • If Setting 114 is set to zero, automatic auger operation will not occur.

  • M33 stops all automatic conveyor operation while in cycle.
    • Manually stop the conveyor while in cycle by pressing the [CHIP STOP] button on the keyboard. This stops all automatic conveyor operation while in cycle.

Manual Operation

  • Press the [CHIP FWD] button on the keyboard to start the belt-style conveyor in the forward direction to remove chips.
  • Press the [CHIP REV] button on the keyboard to start the auger belt-style conveyor in the reverse direction to clear a jam.
  • Press the [CHIP STOP] button on the keyboard to stop the belt-style conveyor.
