Work Envelope ≠ Machine Travels

In 5-axis machining, your part and workholding must be able to rotate and tilt within the workspace, allowing you to reach all areas of the part, without interference or collisions. This yields a cylindrical work envelope that is smaller than the machine travels.

ATTENTION! The maximum part weight (part and workholding) should not exceed the maximum platter capacity of the machine, regardless of part size.

When adding an automation system to your Haas UMC, it’s important to consider the part size and weight capacity of the automation system, as this is often less than the size and weight capacity of the UMC itself, and will dictate the size and weight of part you can load into your machine.

Be sure to account for the weight of any workholding or fixturing for pallet pools, and the weight of the grippers for robot system, as these will affect the total part weight.

How Automation Affects Your Machine’s Work Envelope

When you’re thinking about adding an automation system to get more productivity out of your Haas mill or lathe, it makes sense to look at the capacity of the system, since this will dictate the size and weight of part you’ll be able to load into your machine. Product Specialist John Nelson gives us some descriptive examples to help understand how to evaluate if a particular system will work for our application.

Precision Machining on a UMC-750

The UMC-750 is an affordable solution for 3+2 machining and simultaneous 5-axis work, on a platform that is intuitive and easy to use.

Simplify 3+2 and 5-Axis Machining

Using DWO/TCPC (Dynamic Work Offsets / Tool Center Point Control), you can create your CAM program ahead of time, and then place the workholding and part anywhere on the table, with no need to repost your program!

Single Setup Machining

Typically, this part would require multiple setups and operator handling, but the UMC-750 will produce the finished part in a single setup, with increased accuracy.
