L&S Machine, based out of Pennsylvania, is a contract manufacturer that produces close-tolerance, high-tech parts predominantly for the nuclear sector, but also for the aerospace, commercial, oil & gas, and medical industries.

“Haas was our ideal partner, because of price, delivery, maintenance, and the uptime of their machines – after looking across the board at all other machine tool makers,” said Rob DiNardi, president of L&S Machine Co.

With more than 30 Haas machines in their shop, L&S can efficiently produce a multitude of parts for the companies they service, including Astrobotic Technology, Inc., a space robotics company on a mission to make the moon accessible to the world.

In order to produce these complex parts, L&S made the jump to 5-axis machining, with six Haas UMC-750s and one UMC-1000 in their CNC lineup. The full 5-axis capabilities of the Haas UMCs allow the L&S team to reduce the number of setups and minimize changeover times for complex parts, while maintaining the close tolerances required by their customers.

“The big reason we went to 5-axis machining is it essentially reduces the machining operations,” said DiNardi. “The first operation can pick up 5 of the 6 sides of a part, and the final operation can pick up the final side that’s bolted down to the table.”

DiNardi also noted that the machining operations are longer with 5-axis machining, so machine operators can run several machines at one time, greatly increasing output.

The current skills gap facing the CNC industry was another reason L&S chose to standardize on 5-axis machining and Haas machines. The Haas control is the same on all machines, so “it’s standard across our whole machine shop,” said DiNardi. “You only have to train people one time.” Having the same control on all machines also allows the team to transfer programs, across the internet, to their other facility in San Jose, California.

“Having all the same machines allows us to efficiently schedule the factory floor,” said DiNardi, “you don’t have to worry about moving to a horizontal for this operation, a vertical for that operation. We can put the work out, and put it on any machine on our floor.”
